‘I am Ramdeen’ is a stop motion short film based on the issue of death penalty in India. It is a visual representation of a poem written by Jahnavi Misra. It aims to highlight the fact that the simple violence of punitive measures like capital punishment often belies systemic inability or refusal to deal with deeper societal problems like poverty and inequality. The film shows a death row prisoner named Ramdeen, celebrating on finally receiving a verdict on his case, after waiting for twenty years. It is a fully handmade animated film and the materials used are terracotta clay and paper. The short is written by Jahnavi Misra and is animated by Apoorva Mundoor and Jahnavi Misra. Voices are by Ramashanker Misra and Lokendra Sharma.
Inspired by an old grandmother’s tale from South India, ‘The Sweetmeat Boy’ is a story about a young goatherd from a small village called Mundrupadi. One day the boy takes his goats and wanders into a deep jungle, where he finds a tree that is laden not with regular fruits but his favourite sweetmeats. The boy and his goats frequently enjoy the sweetmeats; until one day a Rakshasi-ajji (demon-granny) espies them and conspires to eat the boy’s heart – imbued with the sweetness of the sweetmeats. Pretending to be a helpless old woman, she captures the boy and carries him far, to her own house. But the boy has presence of mind and innocence on his side, so he receives some assistance from the universe. The Rakshasi-ajji does not find it so easy this time. The Yakshagana music samples are from Shri Dharmasthala Kshethra Mahatme.
